Sun-Love By Madhubrata Bhattacharyya

Sun-Love

Too many girls
With skin
This specific shade
Of
Sun-loved
Learn their lessons
Early
In the womb.

Learn too early
To contort themselves.
Lower voices.
Shrink.
Into
Someone else’s acceptable.
Learn virtues
From grandmothers
They have never seen.
Learn humility. Learn grace.
Perhaps that
Is
Why we grow afraid
Of the fire in our hearts
Or
Between our legs.
Perhaps that
Is
Why we can only love closeted.
